Our History

Mersey Seafoods Limited was founded in 1964 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia by Dr. Bill Murphy and a group of like-minded businesspeople who recognized that the key to unlocking growth and prosperity lay in creating more employment opportunities.

On June 8th, 1965, a steel barge glided down the slipway at Steel and Engine Products, known then as STENPRO (rebranded Mersey Marine Limited in 2023) marking the birthplace of a remarkable fish plant. This fish plant was a unique blend of a factory ship and a land-based facility. Designed to process an impressive ten million pounds of fish annually this ambitious endeavour promised employment for 40 to 50 individuals, aiming to breathe new life into the local economy.

As time passed, Mersey Seafoods flourished, expanding its presence to include plants and wharves in Moose Harbour, Guysborough County, Petit-de-Grat, Nova Scotia, and Souris, PEI. The company soon become a leading force in the northern cod and coldwater shrimp fisheries propelling it to new heights.

The company’s pioneering spirit was further exemplified through the construction of three groundbreaking freezer trawlers: Mersey Viking (1980), Mersey Venture (1987), and Mersey Phoenix (2002). Peak employment grew to nearly 2,000 dedicated individuals, making a profound impact on local communities.

In 2019, Mersey Seafoods proudly unveiled a cutting-edge seafood processing facility, accompanied by modern office space in Liverpool. Specializing in the processing of Atlantic sea scallops, this state-of-the-art facility reinforced Mersey’s commitment to bolstering the local economy.

Today

One of Atlantic Canada’s largest privately owned seafood companies, exporting to international markets around the world.

Mersey owns a fleet of four large fishing vessels harvesting coldwater shrimp, offshore scallops, and groundfish along with a modern scallop processing facility in Liverpool, NS and a cold storage facility in Country Harbour, NS.

In 2019, Mersey acquired an interest in Scotia Harvest, Inc., a vertically integrated seafood company based in Digby, NS with a fleet of vessels fishing scallops and groundfish and a state-of-the-art 46,000 sq ft processing facility completed in 2021. In the same year, Mersey acquired 75 percent ownership in Fisherman’s Market International Inc., a long-standing Halifax-based retailer, wholesaler, and exporter of fresh, frozen, smoked, and salted seafoods as well as live and frozen Atlantic lobster.

Mersey owns two ship repair businesses with significant capabilities, Mersey Marine Limited located in Liverpool, NS, and Shelburne Ship Repair (purchased in 2022), providing a comprehensive range of services in the marine repair sector.

In January 2024 it was announced that the commercial redfish fishery is set to reopen in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 2024. As the largest individual holder of redfish quota, Mersey is poised to leverage past investments, including Scotia Harvest’s cutting-edge processing plant to capitalize on this opportunity.

In February 2024, coinciding with Mersey’s 60th year in business, Mersey announced the historic purchase of offshore scallop quota. This significant investment in our business solidified Mersey as a major player in the offshore scallop business, further reinforcing our commitment to our teammates, our communities, and the strength of the fishery for the long term.
